The Oscars ceremony will no longer be broadcast on television, but exclusively on Google’s YouTube platform starting in 2029, at a time when concerns in Hollywood are running high amid discussions over Netflix’s potential acquisition of Warner Bros.
Beginning in 2029, the Academy Awards will be streamed exclusively on YouTube, the Academy announced, marking a major shift away from traditional television toward streaming, despite the U.S. film industry’s concerns about these. After decades of being televised on ABC, the world’s most prestigious film awards ceremony will be available only online under a five-year agreement.
This decision by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences aims to reach “the largest possible global audience, which will benefit our members and the world of cinema,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor in a joint statement.
